Newmont must divest

The Indonesian government cannot afford to assume control of 17 percent of US Newmont Mining Corporation’s copper and gold unit in West Nusa Tenggara, despite the ruling by a Geneva-based international arbitration court last week that the American gold producer complete the divestment within the next 180 days. Although the arbitration panel granted the government the right of first refusal to acquire the 17 percent holding, such an investment should not be a high priority, especially in light of the global financial crisis.
