ASEAN parliament agrees to reduce economic disparity

The ASEAN Parliament agreed to reduce economic disparities among member countries as proposed by Indonesia, an official said here Friday.
Indonesian Economic Delegation`s Chairman in the ASEAN Parliamentary Assembly Arif Budimanta in a written statement received here on Friday, said that Indonesia called on to rapidly reduce the development gaps among ASEAN countries.

The wide gaps in the per capita income of ASEAN countries included a fact that a country with more than 30,000 US dollars per capita per year, while some others less than 1,000 US dollars per year per year.

ASEAN held a Parliamentary Assembly in Phnom Penh, Cambodia 18 to 23 September 2011 with the theme Building the Welfare of ASEAN Community.

According to Arif, a reduction of the economic development gap is needed to strengthen the region`s stability, resilience and sustainability of economic development in facing an integrated ASEAN Economic Community by 2015.

ASEAN Parliament also called for the six member countries to help accelerate economic development in fellow ASEAN countries namely Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Acceleration of economic development assistance covered investment, financial aid, capacity building and technology transfer.
