| Date: 4 June 2012 - Author: Jakarta Globe | | ProFauna Indonesia will build an animal sanctuary in Malang, East Java, to care for old and handicapped animals, the organization's chairman said on Monday. | The ProFauna Wildlife Rescue Center Petung Sewu will be built in the Dau subdistrict of Malang to house animals that are sick, old or handicapped, regardless of whether they are endangered or not, Rosek Nur Sahid told the Antara news agency on Monday.
"Animals which are sick or old cannot possibly be released back to nature, because that would only endanger their safety. Therefore we are taking the initiative to build a sanctuary in the Petung Sewu area," Rosek said.
The organization is already taking care of several old and handicapped animals, including a mongoose and its baby brought in by a farmer, he said.
"The mongoose we treated and once it recovers and its baby can live independently, we will certainly return them to nature," Rosek said.
The wildlife center plans to accept both animals brought in by residents and from Indonesian zoos, Rosek said. The center will be financed by donors.
"We do not depend on funding from government institutions," he said. |
